OUMS travels to NYC - Oct 23-26, 2008
Ohio University Multimedia Soceity took a trip to New York City to visit a wide range of multimedia firms. While we were there we toured MTV Networks/Viacom, Razorfish, The Associated Press and MCD.
Our trip started with two 12 person vans leaving for NYC. It was a long drive but a good time. On Friday morning we had breakfast and started our first tour at MTV Networks in heart of the city in Time Square. OU VisCom alumni Adam Wilson and Mark Malabrigo had arranged a great presentation and tour for our group.
At noon we walked a few blocks and sat down with Eric Mayville, (another OU VisCom alumnus) at Razorfish for lunch. Eric showed our group the firm, some of the work they have been doing and talked about landing jobs and internships at Razorfish.
Leaving Razorfish we took a cab over to The Associated Press. Jen Poggi (a current VisCom grad student) had worked at this New York office and set us up with a great tour there. The people at the AP talked about how the newspaper industry has been changing as a result of new media, and what they are doing to keep up.
At 5pm we met with Victor Vasquez and some of the senior art directors at MCD Partners. MCD is a small firm (60 people) who have landed some large accounts around the city. Victor graduated from VisCom 2 years ago and seems to have been doing pretty well for himself in the city.
After a day of tours we had dinner with a few OU alumni and called it a day. Saturday was a bit of a slower pace. Some people went to PhotoExpo, others saw the sites of NYC, and some of us spent the afternoon at The Brooklyn Brewery having drinks and making connections with a large group of OU alumni.
A few weeks before leaving for the city, the group bought a truckload of pumpkins and sold them at the college gate and at the OU student union. The pumpkin sale brought in more than $500 which helped pay for the vans to the city.
